Havana is the largest city in Cuba and one of the largest in the Caribbean area. Declared a city in 1592 by King Philip II of Spain, Havana is now both a major port and a major commercial center for Cuba. With a history including pirates, revolutions, slave trading and more, Havana is unique and intriguing. Students studying Spanish courses in Havana will want to soak in as much of the culture as possible during their stay. A stroll along the El Malecon is a great place to start. This pedestrian walkway follows the shore, and a popular place for people to gather socially. The walkway runs from the Castillo de San Salvador de la Punta in Old Havana (an historical fortress), to the Almendares river. Havana is home to numerous museums, covering everything from fine art to Ernest Hemingway to Cuba’s history. Students attending Spanish school in Havana will notice that Neo-Classicism is the prominent architectural style of many of the buildings in Havana, represented by the use of columns facing open spaces or courtyards. The climate in Havana is typically very pleasant. It is tropical, but somewhat tempered by the islands geographical placement. Rainfall is the heaviest between June and October. Visitors should make sure to experience some authentic Cuban rumba during their stay. They should also try to take in a baseball game at the Estadio Latinoamericano, the home stadium for two teams – the Metropolitanos and the Industriales. The Cubans are as passionate about their baseball teams as they are about life in general.
