Nowadays, Kyoto is a very modern and fast-paced city, but within it are beautiful, but hidden works of art and amazing displays of ancient Japanese architecture. In Kyoto's Central district, for example, visitors will find both a massive modern train station made of steel and glass and the grounds of the Imperial Palace. Eastern and Western Kyoto (Higashiyama and Arashiyama) are both filled with breathtaking natural wonders (beautiful hills, rivers, and mountains) as well as historic areas and sites (the geisha district of Gian and the wooden Togetsukyo Bridge). Kyoto and its neighboring city of Uji are also home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, which students interested in studying Japanese courses in Kyoto can explore these ancient historic monuments during their time away from class.
