More about studying in Salerno »
Salerno is a small city located in the south western part area of Italy. It sits on the Gulf of Salerno on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Students enrolled in Italian school in Salerno will find that it has a rich history. The area now occupied by the city of Salerno has been settled since pre-historic times. It is estimated that humans were first there sometime between the 9th and 6th century BC. The city is home to an important medical school, like the first university of medicine in the entire world. Visitors to Salerno should make time to visit the San Matteo Cathedral. This church, located in the center of Salerno, was founded in 1076. Filled with beautiful frescoes, interesting architecture, artwork and mosaics, it is a popular destination. For the brave and hearty, a walk from San Matteo up to the Arechi Castle is in order. This fortress holds an impressive collection of medieval ceramics and coins, but its most impressive feature is the view it offers over the city of Salerno. Students taking Italian courses in Salerno should also be sure to experience the atmosphere found in the historic center of town. With scattered cafes and boutiques throughout, visitors get a true feel for the flair of this city and its people. The climate in Salerno is warm and welcoming, being one of the sunniest towns in Italy. Resting on the famed Amalfi coast, this city has three defined regions: a medieval sector, a modern area and the more populated post-war area. All three together help to define the city of Salerno, its people and its history.
