The city of Northampton was incorporated in 1883. It is located in the state of Massachusetts near the winding Connecticut River. The area that is now the city was first inhabited by Native Americans. Colonial settlers arrived in 1654. Today this popular college town is a unique city filled with a diverse population. Students enrolled in English school in Northampton will enjoy browsing the shops in the downtown area. With a number of interesting boutiques, bookstores and cafes, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon exploring the community. Known as a great community for artists, visitors might want to stop by the Northampton Center for Arts. This non-profit organization promotes the arts in the Northampton area and provides inexpensive performance space as well as exhibit space. Students taking English courses in Northampton should be sure to visit Smith College during their stay. The Botanic Garden on the grounds of the college is a beautiful place to visit. It has thousands of plants in a variety of collections and displays. The Smith College Museum of Art is another interesting destination with four floors of galleries including prints, drawing and photographs. Visitors should expect to experience a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Be sure to check out the farmers’ markets while in town. Northampton even has one that operates throughout the winter. This programme allows Beginner level students to join lessons for 15 hours per week. It is suitable for Pre-A1 to A1 students who are 16+ years old and who can study Monday to Friday from 13:15 to 15:30 in the afternoons.
