The city of Austin is the capital city of the state of Texas. The area was originally settled in the 1830s. The original settlers were drawn to the banks of the Colorado River and called their encampment, Waterloo. Waterloo became the capital of the Republic of Texas. The Republic was annexed by the United States in 1845. Students enrolled in English school in Austin should be sure to visit the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. In true Texas style, this museum offers 3 stories of interactive exhibits including a special effects show and an IMAX theater. Also take time to visit the State Capital. It is the largest in the United States. When its time to head outdoors, Austin has lots to offer. With over 200 parks and miles of hiking and biking trails, residents and visitors alike enjoy getting outside and exploring the area. Spend some time at Lady Bird Lake kayaking, canoeing or swimming. A trip to the Lady Bird Johnson Wild Flower Center is another great excursion. The center is dedicated to the preservation of the native plants in North America. It also plays host to a number of events throughout the year, including a fall planting sale and gardening festival. Austin is often referred to as the ‘Live Music Capital of the World’. Students interested in the local nightlife will find that they can listen to a wide variety of live performances on virtually any night. Students taking English courses in Austin can expect to experience a mild, relatively dry climate in Austin with over 300 days of sunshine per year.
