Course description

What is the Work & Study Course?

- The Work and Study Programme is an 8 month programme including a 25 week course and 2 month vacation period.
- It is suitable for students from outside of Europe who want to stay in Ireland long term and study and work while doing so.
- It is suitable for those from outside of Europe who need to formalize their stay in Cork for Immigration purposes.

What is the difference between General English Courses and Work & Study Courses?

- The course is the same and the course price is the same!

Work & Study Courses have extra requirements in line with Immigration rules:

- Final exam fee
- Medical insurance fee
- Learner Protection fee

Work & Study (Academic Year): General English + IELTS 

​-  25 weeks General English course (19 weeks General English and 6 weeks IELTS Preparation)
-  An official English language exam (IELTS Exam in this case)

GENERAL ENGLISH (19 WEEKS)

The daily General English lessons covers all of the English language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing with an emphasis on speaking and listening. The main focus of the General English courses is on communication skills in real life settings.

Our syllabus is task-based, with students carrying out tasks in class to provide you with the necessary skills to manage using the English language in real-life situations. 

We also aim to make the syllabus student-centered, placing the emphasis on your training, enabling you to become more independent and provide you with practical skills to apply to your ongoing language learning when you finish your course. 

We have stated objectives and weekly targeted learning outcomes which are 
achievable and measurable.

Your teachers will monitor your progress throughout your course and you will receive regular feedback and advice.

IELTS COURSE (6 WEEKS)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to examine your ability to work, study, or live in an English speaking environment.

Preparation for Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Listening with regular timed examination practice as well as preparation and practice for speaking exam.

RIGHT TO WORK

Non-EEA students who are permitted to reside in the State on a stamp 2 immigration permission are allowed to avail of a work concession.  Under this concession a student may work in Ireland in a casual part-time capacity without a work permit.

Students holding a valid  immigration stamp 2  permission will be permitted work 40 hours per week only during the months of June, July, August and September and from 15 December to 15 January inclusive.  At all other times students holding Immigration permission Stamp 2 will be limited to working 20 hours per week.

AWARDS

All students who successfully complete the programme receive the Cork English Academy Certificate in English. Non-EU students must also complete an official examination at the end of the programme (in this case IELTS). 

RENEWAL

The course can be renewed for a maximum of 2 times allowing international students stay in Ireland for a total of 3 x 8 month periods (24 months/2 years) subject to Immigration permission.

Most family homes are located just outside the city centre and so you may need to take public transport to and from the school. Average distance between the school and host families is 30 minutes.

Transfers to and from Cork airport on your arrival and departure are also included.

Cork English Academy has partnered with Viva Ireland an experienced accommodation provider in Cork to offer you accommodation on arrival.

Usually students staying with us short term (for 2 to 12 weeks) book all accommodation through the school.

Students who plan on staying more long term usually book 2 to 4 weeks accommodation through the school and then search for their own accommodation when more familiar with the city.

Visa support

We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.

Your letter of acceptance will be sent to your home address by regular mail at no charge to you.

Flights and airport transfer

Please note that we do not book flights for our students. If you are researching airfare costs, we recommend using Kayak.com, a search engine that lets you compare flight options from your home country to Cork based on your budget, schedule and preferences.

Travel insurance
