Course description

This General Spanish Course runs Monday through Friday from 9:45 to 13:30 and is divided into two parts: Theory and Practice.

The theory part concentrates on the grammatical aspects of the language. After imparting new concepts the students do practice exercises in order to assimilate them.

In the practice class the students learn and put into practice, in real or simulated situations, how to effectively communicate in Spanish. This part of the course stresses the acquisition of new vocabulary, using readings, tapings, videos and press articles. It also offers the possibility of gaining fluency in expressing oneself through debates, representations, etc.

Both parts are taught by different professors, so that students get used to different accents and styles of teaching. All our classes take part in small groups so the learning rate is quite fast. Our teaching staff always uses the 'communicative' method of language teaching. The teachers encourage students to develop conversational skills and self-confidence, rather than asking them to chant verb conjugations or spend silent hours perusing lists of prepositions.

Activities are not included in the price.

"Overall, a great experience"

Ruth Anne Mitchell, student from Australia

The pre-enrolment assistance from 'Spanish in Cadiz' was second to none. They always replied quickly to my many emails and enquiries and helped a lot.

I enrolled only in the 'conversation course' which I enjoyed. All my classmates were doing the grammar course in the mornings though and then doing the conversation course after which made it hard to keep up with them as they started to learn more complicated B1 and even B2 grammar concepts which they were then applying in the conversation class.

I really liked my teacher, Patricia. She made the classes fun and engaging and she was very good at explaining things. She was also very patient which helps when you're learning and her accent was easy to understand. :)

The school organises a variety of activities every day which is fun. I would note that for some reason, this school seems to either attract much older people (+45) or very young (16 or 17) and there were not many students in the 25-35 age bracket which is a shame.

Another note, I organised my own accommodation which I'm glad I did. It was significantly cheaper than going through the school and I heard very mixed reviews about the various host families people had - some seemed great and others had a bad experience. Living in the school's accom could be good for making friends but it will also mean you are always connecting with other people who you will likely speak English with which is good or bad depending on whether you want the 'full immersion' experience.

"Beneficial"

Ali Usama Ben-Khalaf, student from UK

Without a shadow of a doubt, I would say that this has been one of the most beneficial trips in my lifetime so far. My level Spanish has definitely strengthened, not just via the school but also through embracing the culture. The host family I stayed with were fantastic that I will definitely stay with them again, should I get the chance. There is so much to do in Cádiz, you will not be disappointed, but best of all, you will not regret it!

"The spanish course exceeded my expectations, I learned a lot in one week which was mega fun I would love to come back again soon."

Johanna Gutmair, student from Germany

The course size of 4 people was an optimal learning size, the course rooms were air-conditioned and the outdoor area is very attractively designed, there is a supermarket and cafes in the surrounding area where you can buy something during the break. After the language course you can get to the beach in less than 10 minutes.
The teachers and the organization on site were incredibly great. I would have loved to stay much longerI
But I will definitely like to come back again!
There are many activities offered, but we did not take advantage of the offer.
The student accommodation was fine for a week.

"A very good school, but the Cádiz accent lessened the learning process outside school"

Margrit Skott, student from Denmark

I liked the morning classes very much, the afternoon (kl. 12 - 13.30) slightly less.
That goes for the teachers as well. But on the whole the teaching was good.
The size of the room and the number of students was good.

I was very disappointed about the activities after school. In the description there seemed to be several possibilities.
In my fourteen days there was only the trip to Jerez market with dancing, horses and lunch. That was a good experience.

The family was very nice and helpful, but it was difficult for us to communicate.
The cause was my level and the Cádiz language and speed.
The room was OK. Only the writing desk was far too small, and I am not especially big.
Good bathroom facilities.
The food was very good.

"A nice experience to be able to talk and learn"

Annika Schupp, student from Germany

The school is in good condition. Some rooms are technically very well equipped. The teachers are all very friendly and nice. I liked most the conversations in general, in which I could learn something about the history of Cádiz or the actual events. The teachers were committed, punctual and well prepared.

However, I would have liked it if the school had taken more time at the beginning to find out what the student actually wants to achieve and what he is doing the course for. With me this was clarified only in the following hours. But this is only a small comment, because it was a nice experience and I would come again.

I also liked the idea that homework was given. So it was made sure that what I had learned could also be used by myself at home.
I really enjoyed the weekly interaction with other groups, the interior with the books and the weekly tips for events.

"A week of great fun, revival of my spanish skills and surfing, with amazing people"

Anna Henning, student from Germany

Classes where fun as well as efficient as we were only three students and our teacher was great- very well structured with logical explanations as well fun stories etc. The location was clean and modern as well as very close to the beach. Surfing was the it thing that made my stay perfect, super friendly teachers and small groups, although when booking you should remember that main surfing season in Cadiz is September to April, so during the rest of the year the waves might be a little unreliable. Accommodation in the shared flats of the residence is something I most definitely recommend- a good way to meet new people and spend your free time! Only thing is that for a student the class is quite expensive- so if that's possible I'd like to propose some discount for students paying themselves. Nevertheless, its worth it!

All in all everything was really good. The words mentioned above worked as they should. You could mention another word, "atmosphere". And the atmosphere at the school was excellent.

"Fantastic experience"

Nicholas James Carter, student from UK

Cadiz is a wonderful city, close to beautiful beaches and even sunny in the winter!

The college and teachers were great and class sizes were small and very interactive.

I would highly recommend this!

"It is a very nice and familiar school, and the teachers who I worked with were all very friendly"

Jeanette Scherz, student from Switzerland

When I came on Monday, I heard that I was the only beginner and that I was alone in the class. First, I thought to myself, “Wow, private tutoring!” but during the lesson it became very hard, because I always had to stay “online”.

Like I’ve said, I am a beginner and I had few vocabulary. I think with 2 or 3 more students, the class would have become more interesting and more relaxed.

Also, I was astonished because you said “Hurry up, there are only a few slots left,” but when I came I was alone in my class.

On the other hand, all my lessons were very intensive, and I had a big benefit from these lessons. I could speak (more or less) about themes which were interesting for me.

My teachers Carmen and Veronica were very clear and I think I understood what they wanted to explain in listening comprehension and grammar.

My schedule was: in the morning 9.45 to 13.30 - Spanish, and from 14.30 to 16.30 - Flamenco.

On Monday, my first day in school, I had no Flamenco. I was a little bit disappointed. The second day, I had Flamenco, but there was no equipment. You assured me that all equipment like shoes, skirts etc. were provided in school but nothing was there.

Carmen is a famous Flamenco teacher and she had Flamenco and Tango dances on her Computer, but the first day I stomped into my ballerinas because there was no equipment for me in the school. It was not a big pleasure for me to dance Flamenco without the special shoes. So I walked in the evening to Cadiz to buy a pair of Flamenco shoes for myself!

I appreciated very much that the beach was so near (20-30m) the school and also my hotel. It was the nicest beach on this side.

Alejandro created a schedule for all evenings so we could decide whether to go to Flamenco class, to a movie, or to a concert. On Friday, he organized Tapas eating with all students. That was very nice and not a typical tourist thing.

"Very good teaching, excellent part of Spain to visit"

Caroline Jane Taylor, student from UK

I thought the school was fantastic, very modern and light and airy with excellent facilities.

The teachers were very personable and clearly very knowledgeable. They established a rapport very quickly and were friendly and approachable. They offered a variety of different activities and were flexible in their approaches.

The apartment where I stayed was good, a nice clean family home -a bit of a shock with the leg of pork, complete with trotter! - on the kitchen counter, but I know this is normal for Spanish families.

"Good pace. Good variety. Lots of reinforcement. Fun!"

Rachael Milne, student from UK

Good friendly team in smart premises close to the beach and old town. This school has a good reputation due to their longevity in Cadiz and high quality of teaching. The teaching methodology was great, the teachers would introduce a topic and draw out Spanish you already know somewhere in the deep recesses of your brain, then add to it, introduce a grammar point for example, explain it so you understand then practise practise practise and reinforce reinforce reinforce. Then before you realise it you are using it to talk to the super friendly Gaditanos! The team at SIC make you feel welcome in Cadiz and suggest and arrange social gatherings. Time flies by in class. Highly recommended.
