"A terrific opportunity to stay with a local family, experience life in Santiago and improve my Spanish"

Jeffrey Coutts, student from Australia

My experience was based on a home-stay with individual tuition for a couple of hours a day. The host family was very welcoming and wanted the best for me from my stay with them. They had a stand alone house in a suburb and I had my own bathroom - which was good. They treated it as an immersion for me, and so the language of the week was fully Spanish - only reverting to a little English if I struggled with something. I shared meals and conversation around the table with the family and lots of opportunities to explore different topics, practice speaking and improving my understanding of spoken Spanish. After breakfast (usually breakfast started at 8.30 - late for an Australia, but I got into the pattern easily), we had 2 hours of more formal tuition. In my case, because I was to give some presentations in Spanish at some workshops in rural Chile, the lessons centred around the presentations - the words, their appropriateness and pronunciation. This was very helpful for me. Now that I have finished my workshops presentations, i can report that the lessons really helped me with confidence in the presentations and helped me to present better. During the week of my course I managed to go into the city on the metro and many walks around the city. I was also taken for a drive to some of the nice viewing places of the city. All in all, a great work and just what I was looking for and needed.
