INTRODUCTION
Understanding couture applique and principles.
Learning fashion terminology.
Analyzing textiles for special occasions.
Identify the appropriate blocks for specific garments.
HAND SEWING TECHNIQUES
Learning how to apply and remove sequins
Learn construction and application of a zipper and lining.
Develop hand sewing of sequins in seam allowance and sequin replacement.
Practicing hand beading techniques
Learn how to create different seams.
Learn about different hems
Install invisible zipper in dress.
Merge lining and exteriors
Hand stitch techniques.
TEXTILE
Analyzing and understanding silk
Cutting and preparing silk charmeuse.
Understanding printed textile and matching prints to seams.
Learning about knit fabrics and preparing fabrics
Ruching and controlled fullness and stabilizing.
PATTERN, CONSTURCTION & FIT
Learning about the cocktail dress
Manipulating a circle skirt block and drafting a pattern for the skirt
Constructing and pressing with tailoring techniques.
Bounding buttonholes.
Creating patch pocket
Installing shoulder pad and lining
Compete interior tacking and final pressing.
Manipulating blocks to create bustier pattern.
Learning how to apply boning in to bustier.
Creating couture lace over bustier with no seams.
Understanding Crinoline construction.
Adjusting fit on a live a model
CAPSULE COLLECTION & PRESENTION
Final: Create a mini collection composed of two looks using couture techniques. Includes your sketches, process, mood board and fabric board.
Students will present their final presentation to peers, the Dean of The Cut Fashion Design Academy and the course instructor.

The Cutting Room, owned by apparel and production expert, Liza Deyrmenjian, was born in Vancouver and is the result of 25 years in the fashion and apparel industry. The Cutting Room is where it all happens—ideation and design, pattern making, sourcing, sampling, and production. It is also where beginners and seasoned designers alike come together to better their skills and learn new ones with The Cutting Room’s Fashion Design and Merchandising Academy—The Cut. With one foot in Vancouver and the other in New York City, The Cutting Room supports established fashion and lifestyle brands, coaches up-starts, and teaches the next generation of makers and doers through The Cut’s array of fashion design courses.

Homestays are carefully selected and offer students the opportunity to learn more about the local culture in a comfortable setting while studying English in Vancouver. These homes are often between 25 - 50 minutes away from the school by public transport. Families usually offer affordable meal plans that allow you to sample the local cuisine. If you have special requests or diet restrictions (because of religion or health reasons), please let us know in advance. We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.
