Course description

40+ English Courses are special English language programs designed for people over 40. They offer you the chance to learn English in an overseas location, with other mature students. The course will help you to boost your communication, reading and writing skills and build your confidence when in English-speaking countries.

A light course load of 20 General English lessons (15 hours of tuition) and three organized social events a week means you’ll get a good balance of lessons and sightseeing, and get the chance to mingle with other mature students of different nationalities. Accommodation options are diverse, and can be adapted to suit individual needs.

General English classes

Our experienced teachers are all certified and qualified in teaching English and our lesson content and curricula are carefully designed to improve students' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. You will join students of all nationalities and ages in classes which correspond to your level of English. On your first morning you will take a Kaplan International College test to make sure that your level of English is correctly assessed and you are put in the right class.

Activities

You will enjoy a varied programme of social activities in the company of other students from your age group. Our Classic Programme social activities schedules are drawn up specifically with the 40+ age group in mind. Typical weekday activities include visits to Bath Abbey, the Victoria Art Gallery and the Jane Austen Centre, a traditional cream tea at Sally Lunn’s House, a visit to the Thermae Spa Centre and a boat trip on the River Avon. Local excursions to Bristol, Stonehenge or Bradford-upon-Avon can also be included. Recent destinations for Classic Programme full- day excursions have been to Oxford, Stratford-on-Avon and Salisbury.

"Overcrowded"

Piotr Borowiec, student from Poland

Cons:

Two days were lost - first, organisational one and last, with shortened lessons and a pub visit. I paid for school, not forced conviviality. In other schools the selection and organisation took maximum two hours.

Groups were overcrowded, 15 people per class. There were too few teachers for the number of students. Too much of interaction was with other students, whose mistakes were not corrected.

One-on-one lessons: no didactic proposals from the teacher, he had no plan for the lesson and no initiative.

It'd be better to introduce EU standards for language schools.

Pros:

I liked the trip to Oxford and tour of Bath. The teacher of the group classes was very good.

"It was a great time at Kaplan and Bath is a wonderfull place"

Anja Elshof, student from Netherlands

It was a small class, with students from different countries and different ages, Young and older. The teachers were involved and professional.
The school is in the centre of Bath. It is a small school , the teachers know every student by name.
In the afternoon I took part in excursions organized by Kaplan. I like most off them, but we visit many museums.

I have been there for 2 weeks and I had a great time. Bath is really nice. There are many things to do in Bath and the surrounding is beautiful to bike of hike .

"Talk talk talk"

Francesca Pisani, student from Italy

The lessons were really easy to understand no matter the topic you were studying, all the teachers were so kind and welcoming to every single student and they always tried their best to create a friendly atmosphere among the students so we could socialize quicker.

visa

Visa support

We cannot apply for visas on behalf of students. However, the school can supply you with all the documentation you need to support your visa application.

If you are studying in the UK for over 11 months, you will receive a reference number called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) that you need to submit to the UK embassy along with your General Student Visa application. Students who have successfully booked a language course and have paid their fees will receive a CAS from Kaplan International. Please note that UK law states that a CAS can only be issued to students who intend to pursue English language studies for over 11 months.

If you are studying in the UK for 11 months or less, you have to apply for a special visitor visa called a Student Visitor Visa. As a student visitor, you will not be able to work part-time while studying. If you plan to study in the UK for 11 months or less, a letter of acceptance will be sent to your home address by regular mail at no charge to you. If you wish to receive your paperwork by express mail, you will be charged £ 40 when you register.
